Training a gun dog should be one thing first, PLEASURE, for both you and the dog, and we strongly believe that goes for any breed let alone gundogs. The dogs should understand all what is required of them but as a handler you should make it as easy as possible. The most important thing is steadiness. Steadiness is the basic foundation to build up on.

The satisfaction in seeing a trained dog in the field justifies the time and effort spent training; the rewards will be reaped for years to come.

Many a good dog is ruined by rushing the basics, all dogs mature at different ages and rates and a sensitive hand is required to judge its temperament. It must be a partnership between the handler and the dog and you must learn to read your dog as much as the dog is learning to read you. One thing all Spaniels must be able to do is find, flush and retrieve game, and training methods should be tailor to suit the individual dog, some spaniels are natural hunters and some natural retrievers so you must access your dog and concentrate on any weakness you find.
